Progress Update - Editing Hell is Hell!
It's been a hot minute since I last updated everyone regarding the process of Philistine. I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has been supporting our game.
So what's been cooking? Well, a lot of writing. We are currently uncertain of our plans regarding a demo; however, if we did take this approach, the script has been written. We're talking over 2-4 hours of gameplay, and all that is needed on the writing aspect is for me to hire an editor to go through it. From this point forward, I'd need to commission sprites for anything I may be missing. And with the lead developer finally having a job, I can now afford assets! It's very liberating!
I'm predicting that my MVP (minimal viable product) will be around $500-750. This will be a bare-bones presentation of the sprites needed, with us cutting corners at every step if I believe I can afford to? Does that sound cheap? Well of course, because it is! The demo's main objective is to gauge interest in the product being developed, meaning that I don't want to put out all of the bells and whistles on something that won't even surpass the first stretch goal of our Kickstarter. At least not without a plan...
You see, I've been laboriously editing not just the demo's script, but also the first couple of chapters in the game's story. Editing a story is hard, and editing a visual novel with dialogue choices, even when they do not cause branching mayhem, is even harder. So why edit when your demo might not succeed? Well because writing is therapy for me, and because editing is FREE! I don't need to commission artists just yet, which allows me to horde my money like a goblin and splurge when the story's draft is complete. So come the demo's development, all I'd need to do is direct and make sure the game functions. There's just one problem...editing takes forever! And while i can update you all with various devlogs narrating the masochism of game design, it's all dribble until I have something to show for it. And the hardest part about marketing a visual novel is not spoiling the story in the process.
That said, I do have something to show. Several funny scenes that made me laugh hysterically and hopefully will lighten your day as well. I may be mulling over the next goal for our product, however I can promise you that I am in a much better position now then I was several months ago.
1. Dead End is Death of 4th Wall
2. Priam Hates Kids
3. Half Elf Can't Do Math
4. When taking a bet goes wrong
Note; it the making of this devlog, I have adjusted the typos shown in any of these pictures. These are just some quirky screenshots I took to show my friends. I promise you, my writing isn't that bad...
I am almost done editing the second chapter of my game. These chapters are massive undertakings, so I promise you all that the game, whether the demo comes out before or after the draft has been edited, will have a lot of content for you all to enjoy. The future looks murky, uncertain, and brighter then it ever has! I just need to get adjusted to my new work schedule. I'll be sure to keep in touch with you all, and have a happy Halloween!
